Phil Mann is somewhat of a veteran in the IBM mainframe arena. (Over 30 years - but he's not saying exactly how many over!) He's done many jobs, both as technician and consultant; most of the time on the production and operational side being concerned with getting things to work, rather than any real development work. He's spent time in a number of areas of Capacity Management and Capacity Planning up to the armpits in analyzing SMF and RMF data. For the last few years he has worked for Macro 4, where he is a consultant working in the area of Application Performance Optimization. As well as supporting Macro 4's products that serve this area; he is more than happy to talk (endlessly some say) about the whole area and practice of Application Performance Optimization as he feels it should be performed. He believes that by adopting a formal approach in this area there are opportunities to both improve service and make real savings in running costs. A rare Win, Win situation; not to be ignored in the current commercial climate.
